Google Password Manager CSV requirements

Google’s support guidance identifies url, username and password as the essential first-line column names. A file can contain other familiar Chrome export fields, but those three are the foundation of a successful import.

Security note: password CSV files are readable plaintext. Do not upload one to a website, including this one.
Looking for an exact first line? Compare header examples and PortaPass export mappings. These are column names only, not an import-success guarantee.

Required first line

Open the file only in a trusted local tool and inspect the header. It must include url, username and password. PortaPass recognises common alternatives during local mapping, then writes Chrome-compatible headers when exporting. The tool on this website checks header names only and immediately rejects multi-line input.

Import path on desktop

In Chrome, open the More menu, choose Passwords and autofill, open Google Password Manager, then Settings. Under Import passwords, choose Select file. Menu wording can evolve, so rely on Google’s current support page if your installation differs.

Limits and batching

Google documents a maximum of 3,000 passwords per import file and 10,000 stored passwords per Google Account. Large files need to be split and imported in batches. PortaPass prevents a single Google export over 3,000 selected rows, avoiding a predictable failure after the file is created.

After the import

Review the import result, search for several critical logins, and consider Google’s password safety check. Then delete the CSV. This is not optional housekeeping: the exported file is readable by anyone with access to it.
